Warp (the name given to OS/2 from version 3 onward) was a joint effort between IBM and Microsoft, and designed from the beginning to be the preferred platform for running Windows 3.x shell applications. To encourage the switch from the DOS Windows Shell to Warp, IBM occasionally ran give-away promotions of Warp, and the Australian Personal Computer magazine even bundled a Warp 4 CD along with its July 2000 issue. The stability of the software can be extremely high, and mission critical business applications such as bank ATMs, supermarket checkouts, automobile assembly lines, and subway ticketing machines, still rely on Warp to get the job done.
Note:
Lack of recent vendor driver support (IBM has officially retired the software) may hinder OS installation on computers utilizing newer hardware design. For example, the unmodified installation floppy disk images will not allow Warp to be installed on a hard drive partition greater than 4GB (not that significant a concern if you are only intending to use Warp as a DOS alternative on which to run a few Windows 3.x Applications).
