DISKBUF (ver 1.00) Abandoned Freeware DISKBUF is a testing tool used to determine the optimum number of "BUFFERS=" (in Config.sys), based upon a specific disks access reduction versus memory allocated to Buffers. CAUTION: Read the notes in the specimine Autoexec.bat file. Program files must be placed in the root of the boot disk. Knowing the optimum number is important, because at a certain Buffer size the time spent searching the Buffer will exceed the time it takes to access the disk directly. For accurate results, all other caching software should be disabled while the test is run. You can always re-run the test again with other caches active, to view their effect. With modern drives, other caches may be unnecessary. WARNING: Some DOS software demands Config.sys to have a "BUFFERS=" line of a specific minimum size, or the software will refuse to run. It may even rewrite Config.sys to suit! NOTE: BUFFERS settings are global, but every disk in the computer has a different access rate. Buffers should therefore be optimized against either the most critical disk, or upon the average of the most utilized disks.
